Katyayani: The Undaunted Warrior
The sixth day of Navratri is devoted to the worship of the Goddess Katyayani. This incarnation of Shakti is in the form of a wise, fearless warrior. She is depicted having four, ten or eighteen arms and three eyes. Carried by a lion, she holds several weapons in her arms along with the lotus flower. There are several legends depicting the bravery of Goddess Katyayani. The most prominent originates from Vamana Purana, where she is said to be manifested from the energy of several gods, taking her form in the hermitage of Katyayana Rishi. Hence, she is named Katyayani.

Katyayani was asked to become Mahishasura’s companion by his messenger Dhundubi. Upon hearing his message, she asked Mahishasura to defeat her in battle to win her hand. Katyayani and Mahishasura engaged in a fierce battle. She defeated his demon soldiers and killed  them. When Katyayani and Mahishasura finally met, he transformed into a buffalo. Katyayani struggled to fight him, which proved to be a real challenge. But later she deceived  Mahishasura and climbed onto his back. He was taken aback by her move and tried unsuccessfully to shake her off. Katyayani then pressed her foot against Mahishasura's neck, pierced him with her Trishul (trident), and severed his head.

Bravery and wisdom are the essence of this aspect of Shakti. She redefines femininity by displaying immense courage in the war against the demon. Katyayani demonstrates the importance of making right decisions in the time of need. Her fierce spirit inspires us to go towards what we fear instead of restraining ourselves from facing it.
