Detoxing Your Way Through Balance (Part 2)
Restriction is to be practiced. Perhaps, it might be the harder part of a detox. Although my idea of restriction in a detox is rather simple, what is hard is repeating it over and over again.
What do I restrict?
I restrict myself from the urge and obligation I feel as a young adult to always think of the next best thing, sometimes an idea, a plot for a new fiction work, what to wear tomorrow or just thinking if I am living an ideal life.
And how do I practice it?
I ground my thoughts by giving myself the rest and freedom of only thinking about the activity I am doing at the moment. Sometimes it's admiring the silhouette of the leaves of the plant I am watering, or the sun penetrating its surface. Other times it's observing the water running off the dishes I am washing, watching it change its shape every time it's poured into a new vessel or something as silly as examining the refrigerator vertically and horizontally to make sure there are no specks of dirt remaining after I have cleaned it.
I tell myself that I don’t have to think about being productive at this moment, I am free to observe, to imagine, to do nothing about it, or just be silly. I detach and detox from the idea that my worth will always be dependent on my productivity.
So, a balanced detox system requires ‘returning’ & ‘restricting’ as the core ideas behind it. These steps can be practiced in multiple forms/manners, depending on the individual’s lifestyle and needs. What might feel therapeutic to one could feel mundane to another. Hence, it is necessary to seek within, assess our routines, lifestyle and continue seeking what brings us joy.
